The football community lost a significant character and voice as Bayern Munich beat Benfica 1-0 on Wednesday. The untimely and unfortunate death of a fan cast a dark shadow over the victory, and the identification of the deceased further throws the football sphere into agony.
The fan who lost his life following a heart attack during the game has been identified as Romain Jean, who dedicated part of his life to football, serving as the first-ever coach of the Luxembourg women’s football team between 2003-2012.
The Luxembourg Football Federation expressed its dismay following the news:
The FLF Board of Directors expresses, on behalf of all Luxembourg football, its sincere condolences to the family of Romain Jean, former national coach of the Rout Léiwinnen
According to RTL, Jean was initially resuscitated multiple times by first-aiders rushing to the scene before being transported to the hospital under intensive care. Life works in mystic ways. Jean tragically lost his life watching the very thing he held quite dear: football.
Women’s football has lost a pioneer, Luxembourg has lost an icon, Bayern Munich has lost a supporter and football has lost a lover. Rest in utmost peace, Jean. Thank you for your service to the beautiful game.
