When one compiles a list of Bayern Munich’s most important transfers in the past 15 years, there will be several names such as Arjen Robben, Javi Martinez and Robert Lewandowski on the list. But what might come as a surprise to casual football fans is that a goalkeeper in Manuel Neuer also fully deserves his spot on the list. But why?
Former Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge sought to explain this in a recent interview with kicker, stating the following: “He was one of those top transfers, absolutely. I knew that if we brought this goalkeeper to Bayern, we would have ten years of peace in this position. He has now been playing here for 13 years. He has taken goalkeeping and football to a new level. All goalkeepers in the world emulate him,” KHR said with pride, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Not long ago, I watched the final in Lisbon against Paris St. Germain again, which we would never have won without him – the saves he made in the first half were incredible. Without a doubt. Sometimes you have to remember the great deeds of these players. Manuel helped us win in countless games.”
As unbelievable as these achievements are, those are achievements of the past. Bayern will need to consider the present when considering whether or not to renew Manuel Neuer, who will turn 39 before the season is up. Will the club bring the legendary goalkeeper back next season? KHR responds: “I don’t know. But everyone at the club knows how important he is to FC Bayern. I think it’s almost astonishing how he has now returned to the Pep Guardiola style of football. He’s playing it well.”
