Tottenham boss hopeful of Cristian Romero featuring against Ipswich Town on Sunday
Tottenham Hotspur suffered their first defeat of the Europa League season as Galatasaray beat them 3-2 at the RAMS Park on Thursday’s matchday four fixture.
Several injuries forced Ange Postecoglou to rotate his squad in several departments and despite their limited resources, it is fair to say that the north London side gave their all in a valiant effort. Ange Postecoglou was disappointed with the first-half display and felt his team could have done better against Galatasaray.
With the Galatasaray game now history, Tottenham must quickly switch their attention toward Sunday’s home game against Premier League newbies Ipswich Town. Ange Postecoglou has a few selection headaches when picking his strongest XI against Ipswich Town, particularly due to injuries to key players.
One of those is Cristian Romero. The 2022 World Cup winner was unavailable for the defeat at Galatasaray after being replaced with a toe injury during the 4-1 victory against Aston Villa last weekend. Big Ange is ‘hopeful’ of having the Argentinean centre-half back in the squad for Sunday, stating he will be assessed in the next two days.
John Wenham—the owner of the famous Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose—feels Cristian Romero will return to the squad and start against Ipswich Town. He expects the experienced South American to feature alongside Radu Dragusin in central defence, with Micky van de Ven currently sidelined with a hamstring issue.
“If he has been called up for Argentina, then he has to play on Sunday,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“We can’t have him sitting out a league game where we need him and then he goes off to play for his country. Therefore, hopefully, he is available to play, and if he is, he will start that game.
“I’d expect him to partner Dragusin, with Ben Davies reverting to the bench.”
Having Romero back for the game over the weekend will be a massive boost for Big Ange and Spurs. Our gaffer revealed in his presser that the 26-year-old has a chance of featuring against the Tractor Boys amid initial reports from Argentina that the centre-back had injured the ligaments in his right toe after hobbling off in Spurs’ 4-1 win over Villa.
Big Ange and Tottenham fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief that Romero’s injury is not serious, bolstered by the fact that the Argentina national team has called him up for international duty in the upcoming break. The Cordoba-born star’s availability should also help in lifting the spirits of the rest of the squad after a tough night in Istanbul in midweek.

Let’s hope the Argentinean passes the late fitness tests required and delivers a strong display against Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich, who are in the drop zone and hungry for points.
