The step up from the Championship is known to be vast: Each year successive teams get promoted and then struggle to move out of the bottom three places in the Premier League despite having some pretty serious cash to splash on new players to try and compete in Englands first tier of football.
Two West Ham players – doesn’t seem right just calling them ‘youngsters’ or ‘academy players’ any more – are impressing on loan at their respective Championship sides. Both are learning and winning plaudits for their performances: George Earthy played over an hour as an emergency wing-back for injury hit Bristol City and helped them build a lead over Norwich City which they never surrendered.
Freddie Potts (main image) played almost 80 minutes in Portsmouth’s midfield, creating chances from set pieces and looking strong in his sides 3-1 win over Preston North End.
Great that both are gaining fitness in the highly physical Championship and learning their craft. I cannot wait to see both back with the senior squad in the summer: Our midfield is crying out for pace and talent which these two both offer. Shame we have to wait until June next year to get them back on board.
