Julen Lopetegui appears to be a dead man walking at West Ham United right now, with a former Liverpool manager being eyed up by the Hammers.
The pressure on Julen Lopetegui cranked up after West Ham drew 0-0 with Everton at the London Stadium on Saturday.
There was talk that David Sullivan was set for crunch talks with Tim Steidten regarding Lopetegui’s future at the club this week, although that has since been denied by club insiders.
Lopetegui has performed terribly in his role as Hammers head coach so far, especially given the financial backing he received in the summer.
His team lack any kind of footballing identity and nobody knows what he is actually trying to achieve, as far as playing style is concerned.
The really concerning thing is that Lopetegui himself doesn’t seem to know how to turn things around.
Things could get a lot worse if he remains in charge.
So could the Hammers owners really make a change in the managerial department imminently?
Ex-Liverpool boss lead candidate to replace Julen Lopetegui at West Ham
So it seems like the Spaniard’s job is far from safe right now.
Lopetegui is being heavily linked with the sack, and if he does move on, a former Premier League boss apparently could be set for a return to England.
According to a report from London World, Brendan Rodgers is one of the favourites to replace Lopetegui at the London Stadium.
The 51-year-old has won three Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic, and an FA Cup trophy during his time in charge of Leicester City.
Rodgers came very close to winning the league with Liverpool in the 2013/14 season, only for Manchester City to pip them right at the final knockings.
The former Leicester manager is well renowned for getting his teams playing some exceptional football.
That’s exactly what we need at the London Stadium right now. However, the way it all ended for him at Leicester City will be a big worry.
Brendan Rodgers playing style
The 51-year-old always insists on a possession based system.
He has his players in a constant flow of movement, in order to create passing opportunities for their teammates.
Rodgers’ footballing philosophy would be a big upgrade on Lopetegui’s at the London Stadium.
However, my big concern about the Celtic manager is his poor defensive record.
He has always had problems coaching a solid defensive unit at every single club he has been throughout his career to date.
That’s the last thing we need at the London Stadium right now isn’t it.
Whilst Brendan Rodgers would get West Ham playing better football than we are under Julen Lopetegui right now, I’m not sure he’d be able to improve our leaky back-line.
