Tottenham youngster George Abbott has been performing well on loan at Notts County
Tottenham Hotspur allowed some of their academy stars to leave on loan and join lower-tier English sides or Belgium top-flight clubs to gain some valuable experience. One of those to go out on loan was George Abbott.
George Abbott, who led Spurs to the Premier League 2 title last season, joined League Two side Notts County on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day. He has played a key role in Notts County’s decent start to the League Two season, assisting once in 11 league games. The midfielder has started nine of his 11 league games as Stuart Maynard’s side dropped to sixth in the table following a 2-0 defeat to Crewe Alexandra before the international break.
The 19-year-old is making quite an impression at Meadow Lane, which has seen him draw comparisons with previous Notts County loan stars Jack Grealish and Ryan Yates. The former eventually made a £100m move to Manchester City where he won the treble.
Grealish—during his days with Aston Villa—spent the 2013-14 season with Notts when they were a League One side, while Yates arrived on a short loan spell during the 2017/18 campaign after the Magpies had dropped a division. And Abbott has acknowledged just how delighted he is to be compared with such players.
“It’s always an amazing thing for the fans to sort of compare me to the brilliant players that have moved on from Notts County to where they are now,” Abbott told BBC East Midlands Today (h/t BBC Sport).
“I hope I can carry on from where they left off, be my own player and get to the level they are now.”
Abbott has adapted to the League Two environment like a duck to water, helping Notts push for promotion. His calm and composed displays in the middle of the park have allowed Maynard’s side to control the games, barring a difficult day in the office during the 2-0 defeat to Crewe Alexandra.
The Islington-born talent will certainly not get carried away following flattering comparisons with Premier League players such as Grealish and Yates. The former Spurs under-21 skipper is making giant strides on his loan spell at Notts, thereby, showing Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff what he can do in top football.

Abbott certainly has surprised many with his progression, and if he continues in the same vein that he has started off at Notts, it would not be surprising if the Lilywhites recall him in January and loan him out to a team playing in a higher division for the second half of the campaign.
