Manchester City are reportedly unwilling to let James McAtee join West Ham, citing the 22-year-old’s value to the squad during a mounting injury crisis. McAtee has made just six appearances for City this season, three as a starter, but Pep Guardiola is keen to keep him in the fold as the club chases a fifth consecutive Premier League title.
West Ham’s interest in McAtee stems from his impressive loan spell at Sheffield United last season. However, the Hammers are growing increasingly concerned over Lucas Paquetá’s future, with the Brazilian midfielder under investigation for alleged betting irregularities by the FA. Additionally, Paquetá is involved in a separate case in Brazil alongside family members concerning suspicious betting patterns in the UK and Spain.
Even if cleared of all charges, Paquetá is reportedly considering a return to Brazilian football, with two Brasileiro Série A clubs already showing interest in securing his services.
For City, McAtee’s potential exit is deemed too risky, especially as Guardiola navigates squad injuries while aiming to maintain dominance in the league. The young midfielder is seen as a valuable asset for both the present and future at the Etihad.
Where that leaves the Hammers is anyone’s guess but unless Carlos Soler can step up, the club will have to find a creative spark from elsewhere.
