Son Heung-min will now stay at Tottenham until 2026
Tottenham Hotspur exercised a one-year contract extension for Son Heung-min on Tuesday, keeping their skipper at the club until the summer of 2026.
Speculation about the South Korean’s future intensified as his contract approached its final six months, making him eligible for free negotiations under the Bosman rule. Reports linked him to big clubs, including Manchester United and Atletico Madrid, who perhaps viewed the forward as an ideal target to fortify their squads without incurring sizeable transfer fees. And why won’t they?
Having joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2015, Son Heung-min has become arguably the most famous footballer in Asia and a modern-day great for the club. With 169 strikes under his banner in 431 appearances, he is currently the fourth-highest goalscorer in the North London club’s history.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson thinks Son’s contract extension was never in doubt and Ange Postecoglou’s side have now been handed “a great boost” by the update.
“The relationship he’s got with the club, the supporters, and the club feel about him, he’s one of those players that you can’t imagine playing for any other Premier League team. It’s like Mo Salah and Liverpool,” Paul Robinson exclusively told Tottenham News.
“There was never going to be any doubt about him extending his contract. It’s fantastic news but it comes as no surprise – it’s a great boost. I just hope it’s not the only signing the club make in January.”
While Son has endured an injury-hit 2024/25 campaign that has yielded just five goals and six assists in 17 top-flight appearances and has not been at his sublime best, it is still big news that he will remain at White Hart Lane for at least one more season with so many rumours floating about his future.

After Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, Son has been Tottenham’s longest-serving player and it would have been a body blow to lose him for nothing at the end of the season. Extending the South Korean international’s contract until 2026 protects the club against the player walking out for free in the summer or signing a pre-contract agreement with an abroad club this month.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean Son will remain at N17 beyond next summer. If the cash-rich Saudi Pro League revive their interest and make an enticing offer, and the veteran forward pushes for an exit, the chiefs at the Hotspur Way may not be hesitant to cash him in and reinvest those funds into signing a younger attacker.
