Arsenal got the better of Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League this midweek as the Gunners paint the town red, and the pressure continues to mount on Ange Postecoglou, who is ensconced in a frustrating season with the Lilywhites, who stay far away from their season’s objectives in the English top tier.
While the visitors took an early lead with a Heung-Min Son volleyball that got deflected through Thomas Partey back into David Raya’s net, the men in red and white came all guns blazing from that moment on and converted a one-nil deficit into a two-one win.
Controversial Arsenal first goal
However, there could be a bit to talk about the corner that led to Arsenal’s first goal. Gabriel Maghalaes headed it into Solanke’s body as the ball flew back into the net. Although it was not a corner in the first place, that is what ex-PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has been speaking about in the aftermath of the North London derby.
He thinks that the ball struck Trossard’s leg before going in behind. And speaking about it in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Hackett said:
“The ball certainly appears to strike Trossard before it goes out of play. When you are out in the middle you are looking for help from your assistant referee. Frankly, when you are faced with such a close call and you are unsure then it becomes safer to award a goal kick.
“And, just to confirm, under the VAR criteria, they cannot come in on a wrong corner kick decision.
“That is not in the criteria.”
While it was a deflected corner, there needs to be an admission of how the ball by Rice and that run by the Brazilian centre-back was a top-notch sequence for the Gunners and how it is too difficult to defend such type of balls into the six-yard box, which is crowded with bodies.
Trossard went on to score the second for the hosts as they took all three points and the bragging rights on the final whistle.
