With all of the dominance they had throughout the proceedings, Bayern Munich allowed it to be a bit too close for comfort, but ultimately secured a 3-2 home win over VfL Wolfsburg to keep their perfect start to 2025 going stromg. Their third win of the new year came by virtue of a brace from Leon Goretzka and a sensational solo effort from Michael Olise, but the brace for Wolfsburg’s Mohamed Amoura made things more interesting from the neutral perspective.
On the overall balance, Bayern out-shot Wolfsburg 25 to 7, with 10 of them going on target to Wolfsburg’s 3, but the Rekordmeister were left to rue a plethora of missed chances. Vincent Kompany’s side really could have and should have won the match 4-0 or 5-1, but it is still a vital three points that keeps them at the top of the table.
For striker Harry Kane, while still putting in a solid performance, he was not able to find the back of the net for the third straight match. After the win, though, he was asked about the contract situations at the club that are looming large in the background. The club is still working to finalize contract extensions for Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich, as it has been the club’s prime focus during the winter transfer window rather than incoming business.
For Kane, he explained how all of the contract talk is just outside noise for the players, and that the squad is not letting it distract them from their football. “It’s a bigger topic outside than it is within our team. We don’t talk about it much in the dressing room. But I would be happy if all the boys extended their contracts and we built on what’s currently happening here,” the striker explained (via @iMiaSanMia).
Fellow English compatriot Eric Dier is said to be leaving the club this summer when his contract expires, but Kane still reserves some hope that might change. “Yes, I would love that [Dier getting renewed]. He did really well when he played. Eric and I get on very well. But we haven’t talked about his future. That’s a matter between him and the club,” Kane enthused. His case could be strong, too, as he has stood firm to his task when Kompany has called upon him, including the recent 1-0 win away at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
