Chelsea’s January is really focused on sales at the moment, although with 2/3rds of the month gone they’ve yet to secure a significant outgoing.
One of the players top of the list to potentially go is Carney Chukwuemeka, who has not had a sniff all season. The Blues did their best to shift him in the summer, but there were no takers, at least on the terms they demanded.
A piece in Catalan paper Sport today has claimed that Barcelona were one of those teams, with sporting director Deco apparently super keen on the midfielder. There were some whispers about this at the time, which we reported on.
Barca wanted to take advantage of the overcrowded Chelsea squad – but they fell victim to their own mismanagement along the way. Ultimately the same financial problems that have turned the registration of Dani Olmo into a nightmare for them this winter were what blocked any attempt to sign Chukwuemeka.
Chukwuemeka to remain stuck despite interest from top teams
Given those issues with Olmo, it seems impossible that Barca make a move for Chukwuemeka this month. However if he’s still on our books come the summer, we can see a deal with them happening.
As for Carney’s immediate future, while Chelsea would prefer not to loan him, they may find they have no choice. After not finding a permanent solution for him in the summer, there doesn’t seem to be anything close now either.
Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan join the list of elite teams being linked – but if none of them actually make a concrete bid, the 21 year old isn’t going anywhere. This has already been a wasted 6 months for him – we really hope it doesn’t turn into a wasted year.
