Arsenal have been successful in their bid to have Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card overturned after the independent commission agreed it had been issued in error.
Arsenal midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly has had his three-game suspension overturned following an appeal to the Football Association (FA).
An independent Regulatory Commission upheld Arsenal’s claim of wrongful dismissal, deeming that Lewis-Skelly should not have been sent off during Saturday’s dramatic Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The controversial incident occurred in the 43rd minute of the match at Molineux, with referee Michael Oliver showing Lewis-Skelly a straight red card for what was deemed “serious foul play” on Wolves defender Matt Doherty.
The decision, made on the field, was reviewed and upheld by VAR, further infuriating Arsenal players, staff, and fans alike.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was notably restrained in his post-match comments but hinted at frustration with the officiating.
Arsenal subsequently launched an immediate appeal, which has now been upheld, allowing the 18-year-old to avoid a three-match ban.
The decision, which came quickly, also humiliates PGMOL who went out of their way to defend Oliver’s decision.
Speaking at Arsenal’s pre-Girona press conference, Riccardo Calafiori was asked what he thought of the decision being overturned. “We knew it was a mistake,” he said. “We were upset but at the end we won the game. As I say we are happier.”
Mikel Arteta added, “We’re very happy that decision has been made and Myles is going to be able to play for us again in the next three games.” He also revealed that Lewis-Skelly “was sleeping on the plane when I look to him when I got the news.”
