Tottenham willing to pay the release clause of Nico Williams
Tottenham Hotspur ideally should have a busy transfer window in the summer after overlooking several gaping holes in their squad over the ongoing winter window. And regardless of whether Ange Postecoglou lasts in his role beyond the season or not, Daniel Levy will be under tremendous pressure to prove that he is the right man to lead the North Londoners by rebuilding the first team.
Give Me Sport has claimed that the Lilywhites are already taking steps towards revamping their roster ahead of 2025/26 by showing a willingness towards triggering Nico Williams’ release clause at Athletic Bilbao, amounting to £50 million. Arsenal and Barcelona have been amongst numerous other clubs keen on the La Liga forward but Spurs are hoping to expedite things sooner rather than later.
Nico Williams gained prominence following his terrific performances at Euro 2024 with the Spanish national side which eventually went on to win the competition at England’s expense in the final. Though the 22-year-old stayed committed to Athletic Club for 2024/25, he could make the jump to one of Europe’s bigger sides in the upcoming summer.
If indeed Tottenham Hotspur are keen on acquiring Williams this year, they would need to be ready to pay him a mammoth salary as well. He is one of the highest-paid players at the San Mames, so Daniel Levy will need to make his best possible offer to price Williams away from the Basque county and land him ahead of other competitors.
Williams would be a superb addition for Tottenham and a timely one at that as Son Heung-min’s form has been questionable for the duration of the 2024/25 season. Although the South Korean has signed a contract renewal until June 2026, Spurs will need to replace him sooner rather than later and Williams has everything under his belt to be the worthy fill-in for the team’s captain.

Arsenal and Barcelona, however, can offer Williams the chance to feature in the Champions League next season, a proposition that Spurs can realistically achieve this season only by finishing as the Europa League winners. Therefore, it remains to be seen how much precedence Williams is prepared to give them as well whilst deciding his future.
