Bayern Munich managed 35 shots and 75% possession but still only beat Slovan Bratislava 3-1 in the final matchday of the Champions League group phase.
The result sees the Bavarians avoid an early exit, but they will need to win a play-off in order to reach the Knockout stages.
Vincent Kompany rolled the dice with an ultra-attacking lineup — Kim Min-jae the only regular center-back and an extra body in the attack while Joshua Kimmich dropped into the defensive line — but Bayern’s bid to score goals by the boatload was frustrated by a stubborn Bratislava resistance. By the end of the match, it was the visitors who came up with a few good chances to score — and even made good on one of them.
Is this Bayern team ready to sail into the Champions League Finale this year? If so, they will need to find another gear.
