Leeds United have said that a supporter has been arrested and issued with a lifetime ban after Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe was confronted in his technical area during the closing stages of Saturday’s draw at Elland Road.
The incident happened in the 93rd minute of the game, which finished in a 2-2 draw.
The fan approached Howe, before being swiftly escorted away by stewards and security.
Leeds later issued a statement that read: “Leeds United can confirm that following an incident at our Premier League match against Newcastle United today an arrest has been made, and a lifetime ban has also been issued.”
The Athletic has contacted West Yorkshire Police.
Howe said after the incident: “I actually can’t remember whether he pushed me or not; I’ve got no idea. It was just such a strange thing because you’re concentrating on the game; it’s not something you expect to happen.
“He confronted me, said something that I can’t repeat, and then he’s led away. I think that’s what happened. But someone might tell me differently.”
Howe added: “I’m okay. I think that moments like that do make you think that the safety of staff (and) players is paramount in any matches in the Football League. We need to be mindful. You know, I think security is so important.”
When asked whether he was fearful, Howe continued: “I don’t know if I had time to be fearful, to be honest, because it was over in a flash. But certainly it makes you think, you know ‘what ifs’. But I think it’s moments like this that should hopefully make people think and analyse things and see how we can improve safety for, as I say, staff and players.
“No one should have to face that playing a sport they love and trying to entertain the country. No one should have to feel their own personal safety is violated. So it’s certainly something for us to reflect on.”
A joint statement from the Premier League, Football Association, English Football League and Football Supporters’ Association last month warned that anyone entering the pitch would face a ban and police action.
It read: “We must remind supporters that in the interests of safety and wellbeing for everyone inside our stadiums, the pitch is for players, managers and officials, while the stands are there for fans to support their team.
“At the end of last season, we witnessed some unwelcome scenes when fans entered the field of play without permission at several grounds. Even if this is done in celebratory fashion, any supporter who comes onto the pitch is breaking the law and putting the welfare of players, coaches, club staff and fellow fans at risk.”
An intense game between a Leeds side battling for survival and a Newcastle team bidding to secure Champions League football featured three penalties and a late red card for Junior Firpo.
Luke Ayling had given Leeds an early lead and after Patrick Bamford’s first-half penalty was saved, Callum Wilson converted twice from the spot to edge Newcastle in front.
Rasmus Kristensen’s late equaliser rescued Leeds a point but Sam Allardyce’s side remain in the relegation zone — a point behind Everton, who host Manchester City on Sunday.
