It is ‘essential’ that the Premier League do not rush the FFP investigation at Everton after rivals tried to fast-track the case.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Premier League must take time to reach the ‘correct conclusion’ in Everton’s investigation.
As reported by The Times (May 17), multiple Premier League clubs have failed in a bid to fast-track Everton’s Financial Fair Play charges so that they are completed before the end of the season.
Relegation rivals Leeds United are understood to be a major driving force behind trying to rush the process, while Southampton, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest also pushed for sanctions to be handed out this season.
Leeds also appealed to the Premier League last season for access to any evidence into their Everton investigation, with relegated Burnley also involved.
Maguire defended the Premier League’s decision to deny appeals from other clubs so that they can thoroughly investigate the alleged breaches.
“With regards to the Everton case, I think it’s essential that the correct conclusion is reached rather than a rapid conclusion,” Maguire told Football Insider.
“Many aspects of life have indicated that trying to get things done quickly isn’t necessarily the appropriate action to take.
“So I’m not at all surprised that there has been pushback from the Premier League.
“The Premier League wants to gather evidence around financial profitability and sustainability issues.
“Equally, Everton are absolutely entitled to put forward a defence as well, especially with potential investment getting closer and closer.“
