According to sources in Belgium, Carl Hoefkens is one of many candidates on a list of Leicester manager candidates. Hoefkens left Brugge late December after taking charge in front of last season. He had earlier worked at the club in several different coaching positions.
Leicester do have a sister club in OH Leuven and are known to the Belgian market, and also recruiting many players with a background in this country, to also see a Belgian being listed as a possible candidate to take over the top job at Leicester, could be part of long term thinking.
Scott Parker, also with a past at Brugge and taking over from Hoefkens, left his position after just 12 games in charge as both men struggled to get the team back on track in Jupiler, ending 4th far behind Genk on top and also missing Champions League qualification, as they next season will be in Europa Conference.
To see yet another name mentioned could be the farewell to Dean Smith and his crew, with no indication of the interim manager to have settled either no or yes. The source for the Hoefkins candidature is Sacha Tavolieri. Tavolieri is a Belgian reporter said to be very reliable. He has also earlier today commented on the Timothy Castagne move to Arsenal and saying this could develop quickly.
Leicester are in search for a new direction, and this could be an approach that looks a bit like what Burnley did last summer, appointing Vincent Kompany, also with a previous life as manager in Belgium and of course a strong link to english football.
Hoefkens has a past at Stoke and West Brom, playing for the midland clubs from 2005 to 2009, he then moved back to Belgium and played for Brugge until 2013. Would be a bold move, but still a young, fresh and special man to appoint, that has a type of experience few others could compete with.
Interesting choice if this happens, comes a bit out of the blue, but again very interesting choice.
