Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico has been woken from a coma three weeks after sustaining head injuries in a horse riding accident.
Last month, the 29-year-old footballer was making a horseback pilgrimage journey to Huelva, near his home city of Seville in Spain, when he was knocked off the animal.
Rico had been taken to intensive care after sustaining serious head injuries following the fall.
He was taken off sedation two weeks ago, but was placed into a coma for a second time hours later.
The Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Sevilla, where Rico is being treated, said only major updates would be provided on his condition following a request by his family.

Alba provided the positive update regarding Rico’s condition as his recovery continues
Rico’s wife Alba Silva has now provided a positive update on his condition to Spanish outlet Telecinco, confirming he has now been taken out of a coma again.
‘We can finally see the end of the tunnel,’ Silva said.
‘We’re going there step by step.
‘I knew from the beginning that he would get through it because he’s a champion.’
Silva admitted that patience was still needed in Rico’s recovery, after being asked whether he could recognise members of his family.
‘We’re going step by step,’ Silva said. ‘We need to be patient.’
Rico had sustained the injuries on May 28, with eyewitnesses to his accident reporting that he had received several kicks to the head from a horse once he had fallen to the ground.
He was transported by helicopter to the Virgen del Rocio University Hospital in Seville after suffering serious injury at the start of the month.

Silva had posted an emotional message following Rico’s accident, writing ‘Don’t leave me alone, my love, because I swear I cannot. I don’t know how to live without you. We love you a lot.’
Rico had returned to Seville to take part in the horseback pilgrimage journey after PSG players had been given time off and was in the village of Almontena when the fall happened.
Rico started his career at his hometown club after coming through Sevilla’s academy, and he went on to make 170 senior appearances.
Sevilla players were among those to play tribute to Rico as the La Liga side triumphed in the Europa League final against Roma.
Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint-Germain paid tribute to Rico during their final game of the season.
PSG, who had already been crowned Ligue 1 champions, finished their season with a 3-2 defeat against Clermont Foot.
After scoring a penalty in the 21st minute, Mbappe celebrated his goal by holding up a shirt with Rico’s name and the No 16 on it.
PSG fans paid their own tribute to the goalkeeper, which included a giant shirt with his name and number in the stands.
