Connor Coventry will be joining the West Ham squad pre-season in Australia for the pre-season preparations with a last chance to impress David Moyes.
The lifelong West Ham supporter born and raised in Waltham Forest, who has been at the Academy since he was ten-years-old
Coventry flew to Prague with the first-team squad and picked up a winners medal after making five appearances in the Europa Conference League.
In January this year, Coventry joined Championship team Rotherham United on loan until the end of the 2022–23 season, making 16 appearances under former Hammer now manager Matt Taylor.
And he said of Conor “I love Conor to bits. He’s been excellent for us. His attitude, his endeavour, his intent, his out-of-possession work and the load he’s got through in a short space of time, we’ve been delighted with all of that.”
“It’s a good challenge for him. “He’s got big shoes to fill because our former captain was somebody who had performed so well for us, hence the fee and his move to Middlesbrough who are challenging at the top end of the table.
“Conor is playing a certain role for us and has a certain responsibility. We might not always be playing to his footballing strengths in terms of how we set up the team. He’s been important for us, no question.
“He is having his first real run in the Championship and will have learned so much in his 15/20 matches by the time the season is over. He will go back to West Ham in a much better shape, with an understanding of his own game.
“I feel he is improving. As all young players do, he’s had a few ups and downs in form. He’s constantly getting tested by the Championship and he’s coming through it.”
Coventry is now 23 years of age with just twelve months remaining on his contract. Time is running out for the young man to hold down a regular first-team place and one has to think he may need to drop down to the championship if he wants regular football.
However, prior to last season Moyes explained how much he liked the lad as a player and human being so who knows.
