Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill has been told to snub Liverpool as he would be better off returning to Brighton and Hove Albion on loan.
Colwill has enjoyed an impressive rise over the past year. He was one of last season’s breakout stars in the Premier League as he shone for sixth-placed Brighton.
The Seagulls are hoping to re-sign the young defender, but he is also attracting interest from Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are in the market for an up-and-coming centre-back and Colwill would certainly fit the bill. It was even claimed earlier this week that Liverpool are ‘confident’ of signing the 20-year-old in a deal that could be worth around £68m.
Chelsea have already sold one notable academy product to a direct rival this summer as Mason Mount has joined Man Utd for £55m. But it is fair to predict that new boss Mauricio Pochettino would prefer to keep Colwill and potentially build his defence around the youngster.
But Danny Murphy reckons Colwill would be wise to head back to Brighton if he is to leave Chelsea this summer.
“If his desire – which it sounds like it is, and fair play to him – is to play first-team football,” Murphy told talkSPORT. “Although I would love to see him at Liverpool, because I am a Liverpool fan and he is real quality, why would he go there?
“He’s not going to play. If I was him, I would ask for a loan. Go to Brighton again for another year.
“I don’t think he would [play regularly at Liverpool] although potentially he is very, very good. He’s not going to play ahead of Virgil [van Dijk] or [Ibrahima] Konate.”

Liverpool have already paid around £95m this summer to sign Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Klopp has now revealed that Liverpool’s squad have been taken aback by these two additions.
“Very happy!” said Klopp (via Liverpool’s official website). “Two very good players. I was immediately thinking about nicknames and I thought it would be great nickname for Alexis… Gary [McAllister]! He plays pretty good football, obviously, the same as Dom.
“I was pretty clear in the moment we signed them, the public reception was pretty good, internally it was outstanding, the boys know about football so they were immediately like, ‘Oh my God…’ so that’s really good.
“Now they are here and didn’t take long, let me say, to impress on the pitch as well, so that’s good.”
On Liverpool’s start to pre-season, Klopp added: “We had not a slow start, but a start with a small group on Saturday and since Tuesday everybody is in.
“There are still a couple of injured players, of course, but everybody is here now and really looking good.”
