West Ham are in talks with Ajax over a move for midfielder Edson Alvarez.
Ajax are looking for more than their opening offer of £30m, but the Hammers are keen to finally get their first signing of the summer through the door.
The 25-year-old is on holiday in his native Mexico but is ready to fly to London to complete a medical once a fee is agreed.
His representatives have already agreed a five-year contract worth a reputed £148,000-a-week.
Alvarez, who has been the subject of interest from Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund, is poised to become David Moyes’s first signing of the summer.

West Ham manage David Moyes has been left frustrated by the lack of incomings at the club
Frustration has grown behind the scenes at West Ham with David Moyes’ job at risk despite the Scot delivering the club their first trophy since 1980 last season.
Moyes has been angered at a lack of incomings and feels the opportunity to build on last year’s European success, helped by the £105million sale of Declan Rice, has been wasted.
Pursuits of the likes of Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire have failed and the club are yet to strengthen ahead of a third consecutive year of European football.
But they are hopeful a deal for Alvarez will be completed, with personal terms not an issue and Ajax open to doing business.
Forward Gianluca Scamacca, meanwhile, is on the verge of joining Atalanta after a year with the club.
He found goals hard to come by, netting just eight times in 27 appearances as he struggled for consistency in his first – and what will now be only – year with the club.
A deal worth £27.6m – a guaranteed £22.5m and £5.1m in add-ons – has been agreed between West Ham and Atalanta with personal terms not expected to be an issue and a deal to be completed soon.
Scamacca will be the third West Ham player to leave the club this summer, with Rice moving to Arsenal in a £105million deal and Manuel Lanzini joining River Plate for free.
