We reported yesterday morning that West Ham agreed a late night deal with Ajax for Alvarez at around £33m.

Record set straight over Edson Alvarez rumour which may have upset West Ham stars as board confidant clarifies situation
The print edition on August 6th claimed Alvarez’s agents had agreed on a five-year contract worth £148,000 per week with West Ham.
That would have been just £2k less per week than West Ham’s highest paid player ever – Brazilian magnifico Lucas Paqueta.
Interestingly it would have been more than West Ham’s previous highest earner of all time – Alvarez’s compatriot Javier Hernandez.
Bringing in a new player on that kind of wage has the potential to upset the apple cart at at football club. Especially a dressing room lacking in leadership at the moment.
Mail’s Alvarez salary claims labelled ‘nonsense’
But the record has been set straight over the Alvarez rumour which may have upset West Ham stars as a board confidant clarifies the situation.
Sean Whetstone, whose contacts include vice-chair Karren Brady and co-owner David Sullivan, has refuted the claims about Alvarez’s salary having spoken to his sources.
And he says the reality is a much more modest wage in line with West Ham’s current pay structure.
Whetstone says his sources inside West Ham have confirmed the midfield destroyer will be on £100,000 per week and describe the Mail’s claims as ‘nonsense’.
Whetstone said: “The club source said: “He will be on £100k a week, and the fee is £32m plus £3m of add-ons. The club needs to let it be known that the Mail story is nonsense.“
As a result Alvarez will be West Ham’s fifth best paid player according to Spotrac – the world’s largest and leading online sports team and player contract resource.
