Alasdair Gold shuts down Eric Dier transfer rumours
Popular Football. London journalist Alasdair Gold, known for his insights on Tottenham Hotspur, has shut down the transfer rumours surrounding Eric Dier in recent days.
Dier has been heavily linked with a move away from Tottenham and it seemed like his time at the North London club was coming to an end. However, Gold seems to suggest that that is not the case.
Things started gaining momentum when Eric Dier (29) was snubbed by Ange Postecoglou in his new captaincy contingent with Cristian Romero and new signing James Maddison taking up vice-captaincy duties ahead of him.
For a player who has been at the club for as long as Dier did, this would have been a tough pill to swallow. It also showed where Postecoglou ranked the English defender and hinted that he was not in his plans.
To add fuel to the fire, Dier was not even named on the bench for the game against Brentford last weekend, a game which ended as a 2-2 draw. Whilst the reasons for this may be unknown, it has just set the tongues wagging regarding the defender’s situation.
Incidentally, Cristian Romero had to come off very early in the game and Postecoglou surprisingly chose to name Davinson Sanchez as his replacement ahead of Ben Davies. If his actions are meant to be taken seriously, Dier might just be the fifth-choice this season.
For a player who has worn his heart on his sleeve on numerous occasions for this club, despite his limitations as a footballer, this kind of treatment might not sit well with him. However, Gold believes that Dier is going nowhere.
It remains to be seen if Postecoglou starts counting on Dier in the weeks to come. He is not a bad player by any stretch of imagination and his quality can come in handy if we use him correctly.
