Top-flight Danish side Lyngby are reportedly ‘optimistic’ about signing former Everton and Tottenham midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.
The 33-year-old has been without a club since being released by the Toffees at the end of the 2021-22 season following the expiration of his contract.
Sigurdsson’s last competitive game came during a 5-0 loss to Manchester City on the final day of the 2020-21 season, but Lyngby could now offer him a route back into the game.
Manager Freyr Alexandersson revealed the club had been in discussions with the attacking midfielder and hinted that a deal is close to being struck.
‘There is always hope,’ he told Danish outlet Bold. ‘We are in good dialogue with Gylfi, so right now I’m optimistic that it can happen.

‘But right now there is nothing in place. So we just have to give him a few weeks so he can work on those things in relation to his body. So let’s look at it within two/three weeks.’
Lyngby currently sit seventh out of 12 teams in the Superliga, having played five of their scheduled 32-game season.
The addition of an experienced player like Sigurdsson, who has been capped 78 times for Iceland, could help propel the side to the title contention they enjoyed for much of the last decade.
Sigurdsson started his career at Reading and signed for Tottenham after impressing for Hoffenheim and at Swansea on loan, before joining the Welsh side from Spurs in 2014.
