Despite intense competition from heavyweight clubs including Barcelona, Chelsea, and Arsenal, Sporting has emerged as the most likely destination for the 18-year-old right-back.
Initially keen on a Premier League move, Fresneda has reportedly had a change of heart after negotiations with Sporting’s management duo, Hugo Viana and Rúben Amorim.
In a bid to cement his decision, Sporting also deployed Tottenham’s Pedro Porro, who urged Fresneda to choose the Portuguese club as an optimal launchpad for his career.
Valladolid had originally contemplated taking Sporting players as part of the transaction. However, the arrangement now solely involves a cash payment.
A fixed amount of €10m is agreed upon, but variables could elevate the final price tag to €15m.
The deal isn’t settled yet.
Fali Ramadani, Fresneda’s manager, has visited England in search of alternative offers.
Currently, Premier League sides West Ham and Crystal Palace are the most substantial competitors.
Though they may be willing to up the ante in monetary terms, their projects reportedly lack the allure of Sporting’s vision.
Barcelona, initially one of the favourites to secure Fresneda along with Arsenal, have shifted their focus towards Joao Cancelo, expected to join the Catalan club soon.
This makes Sporting’s path to Fresneda considerably clearer.
