Tottenham defender Djed Spence completes £1m loan move to Leeds after making just six appearances last season following £20m switch from Middlesbrough

Tottenham defender Djed Spence has joined Leeds United on a season-long loan.

Spence could make his Leeds debut at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. 

The 23-year-old has struggled for game time at Tottenham after his exceptional 2021-22 campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest from Middlesbrough prompted Spurs and then-manager Antonio Conte to shell out £20m to secure his services.

However, in his debut season at Tottenham Spence made just six appearances and spent the second half of the campaign on loan in Ligue 1 with Rennes, where he endured a similarly disappointing spell. 

A return to the second-tier with Daniel Farke’s side could see the attacking full-back enjoy a return to form. 

While Leeds are keen to bolster their options at full-back following their relegation from the Premier League, despite keeping hold of Junior Firpo and Luke Ayling and adding former Norwich star Sam Byram on a free transfer this summer.

The 23-year-old found game time hard to come by after making the permanent move from Middlesbrough 

Daniel Farke’s side have conceded seven goals in their first four Championship games

Spurs are set to receive a £1million loan fee and have resisted including any form of buy option in the deal. 

Leeds hope Spence will help sure up a leaky defence that has been breached seven times in just four matches.

Farke’s side edged out an enthralling 4-3 draw away at Ipswich last weekend and take on bottom-of-the-league Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. 

The team sit 13th after a mixed start to the Championship season, winning and losing once and drawing twice under Daniel Farke.
