According to Calciomercato, Liverpool have taken a significant step in their pursuit of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.
The Nigerian forward’s current contract with the Serie A club runs until June 2025, but negotiations for an extension have hit a roadblock.
There appears to be a significant rift between Osimhen and Napoli’s president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, making it challenging to reach a new agreement.
The African ace is reportedly seeking an increase in his annual wages, aiming for a 100% raise from his current £4 million per year.
This demand has become a stumbling block for the Italian giants. Additionally, the player’s representative is pushing for a straightforward and affordable release clause in the new contract, while De Laurentiis insists on setting it at a high value, exceeding £174 million.

According to Calciomercato, Osimhen might be considering a move to the Premier League amidst the contract disputes with his parent club.
Liverpool are reportedly leading the race to sign him and has been actively engaging with the player. If Napoli fails to resolve the contract situation, the Reds could make a move for the £104 million-rated striker.
It’s worth noting that the Merseyside club let go of Roberto Firmino last summer when his contract expired, and they didn’t feel the need to sign a high-profile striker at that time.
However, they might consider doing so in the upcoming year. Additionally, last summer, there was interest in Mohamed Salah from Al-Ittihad, but Liverpool’s management turned down multiple offers for the player.
The champions of the Saudi Pro League might make another attempt to sign the Egyptian winger at the end of the season, and there’s a chance that Salah could express his desire to leave.

In this scenario, the Reds needs to be well-prepared, and it seems they have identified Osimhen as a potential successor to their valuable asset.
Salah has consistently delivered goals and assists for his club while playing on the right wing. Finding a replacement with similar qualities could be a challenge, so Liverpool might opt to bring in a top-tier striker.
Players like Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo could potentially step in to fill the gap on the right wing.
