According to the German publication Sport Bild, Liverpool have taken the lead in the race to secure the signing of Sporting CP’s centre-back Goncalo Inacio in the upcoming transfer window.
Despite a lackluster performance in the previous season, the Reds were expected to reinforce both their midfield and defense last summer to compete effectively this season.
However, while the club did make changes in the midfield during the summer transfer window, they didn’t make any signings to bolster their defensive line.
Liverpool have faced challenges this season due to defensive vulnerabilities, leading to difficulties in maintaining clean sheets.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s team has been compensating for this by winning games through their strong attacking abilities.

It seems that the manager has recognized this problem, and the Merseyside club is actively looking to strengthen their defense in the upcoming year by exploring the transfer market.
Numerous players have been suggested as potential recruits, and Sporting’s Inacio has been mentioned as a strong contender.
Manchester United are also interest in signing the defender. However, as per Sport Bild, the Red Devils have decided to no longer pursue Inacio, making Liverpool the current frontrunner to sign the Portuguese player.
Klopp sees the 22-year-old as an excellent choice to bolster the defense, and the English giants may make a move for him in the upcoming year.
Inacio has a release clause in his current contract set at £43 million, which means Liverpool will need to make a decent investment to bring the talented center-back to Anfield.
