Arsenal came away with nothing after a controversial clash away at Newcastle United at the weekend, with a missed red card and a dubious goal enraging the away side.
According to Jamaal Lascelles, that led to Jorginho refusing to shake his hand. With Martin Odegaard out of action on the day, Jorginho and Lascelles were their respective clubs’ captains.
“I’m just so glad that we beat them,” Lascelles said. “Their captain, Jorginho, didn’t want to shake my hand after the game.
“I was fuming, it’s not on. I would never refuse to shake an opposition captain’s hand. No way.”
Whilst Arsenal would have been disappointed with the result as a team, Jorginho probably felt particularly aggrieved by what happened in the 90 minutes.
It was Jorginho who Bruno Guimaraes hit in the head off the ball in an unprovoked assault, which the VAR decided wasn’t deserving of a red card.
Guimaraes also pushed Jorginho over away from the play in another unpunished incident.
The Newcastle midfielder later picked up a yellow card in a third incident of foul play, so if he’d even received a booking for either incident with Jorginho, he would have been sent off.
In the head of the moment, it’s perhaps not surprising that Jorginho wouldn’t feel inclined to shake hands with the captain of the side that had repeatedly fouled him without repercussions.
