In the wake of England’s dull 2-0 victory over Malta, Matt Law in the Telegraph was left puzzling over what the Three Lions would do at left back.
Not long ago they had a wealth of options, but consistent injuries to Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell has meant that Gareth Southgate has struggled for options.
Last night we saw former Chelsea academy man Fikayo Tomori used in the position, which didn’t work out well at all. There’s also the possibility of using a winger there – although one can’t imagine we’d risk that against one of the big boys.
So it’s all the more of a pity that Levi Colwill, who has played that role a lot for Chelsea this season and even featured there for England in the last break, had to pull out of this camp due to a shoulder injury.
He could have used this chance to really prove to Southgate that he’s a viable option there, and that would have done wonders for his chances of getting in the squad next summer.
