Halftime Thoughts – Everton got hit early on by a wondergoal that saw Manchester United go into the lead early, but have bounced back since then and done just about everything but score themselves. 1-0 to the Red Devils at the break.
45+1’ – Garnacho brings down Young and it’s a freekick that the Blues can put into the box. Pings about in the box and then cleared.
Fernandes cuts down Harrison and the ref chooses to play advantage which Everton don’t take, and not only is it not a booking, but also no foul either? Frustrating, and there’s the halftime whistle.
45’ – Two minutes to be added on here.
40’ – Dom starts a move with a great run on the right, finds Harrison, ball partly cleared and the cross into the box is perfect, DCL rises and heads it just over!
DCL charging at Maguire again, finds Doucs on the right, he holds off from shooting and leaves it for Gueye who slices his shot horribly wide and over! A finish like the winner against Palace would have been ideal there, but I doubt he’s good for more than one of those a season.
35’ – Now McNeil turns quickly and shoots, wins a corner on the left. Cleared, back to Garner, and Everton have to recycle it, but the opportunity is gone. What a spell it has been for the Blues, but still they’re behind, somehow.
32’ – More chances! DCL’s shot saved by a stretched Onana, McNeil jumps on the rebound and a combination of Onana and Maguire keep the ball out, it’s bobbling towards the goalline and debutant Mainoo hacks clear!
Now Doucs! Delightful low cross into the box, and he sidefoots his shot past a rooted Onana … and just wide of the far post.
31’ – Blues have a corner on the left. Garner takes, DCL rises highest and his glancing header is straight at Onana, ooh. Either side and it would have caused the goalie some problems.
29’ – The Toffees don’t have too many ideas when running at the United backline beyond DCL trying to flick the ball behind it.
Goodison set off now as McTominay picks up his second foul and still no booking. Doucoure has some questions for ref John Brooks and gets a yellow card! That will fuel the outrage.
23’ – Everton seeing more of the ball now than at the beginning of the game, McNeil is drifting over to the right as well to create an overload.
McTominay kicks Gana’s heel and his foot then brings down Young as he’s breaking. Everton freekick on the right flank. Poor from Garner, low and cleared, Myko has a shot from outside the box, but it’s tame and wide.
20’ – Good spell of possession for the Blues ends with Gueye open on the right, his cross is floated across the box though with no one challenging for it.
Young booked for hacking down Garnacho who had beaten him. No surprises there, par for the course for the former Manchester United man. Freekick for the Red Devils, poorly so from Fernandes and the Blues can clear.
15’ – Second cross into the box cleared out by Slabhead (Maguire). That isn’t quite the way the Blues need to get into shooting range. Everton are doing a good job holding the ball when they get it, though the passing or movement hasn’t been necessarily incisive.
12’ – Everton are playing the patient press here, letting United build out from the back and trying to pounce on the mistakes.
Rashford open with the diagonal, cuts in and wins a corner off Mykolenko as fireworks are going off just outside the stadium. Ball cleared to Shaw outside the box and his rising shot narrowly over.
10’ – Young finds DCL streaking down the right touchline, he cuts it back to his left foot and fires off a narrow angle shot that Onana smothers. The other Onana, you know.
The tenth minute is upon us and the boos and chanting get a lot louder, marking the points we’ve been robbed of.
7’ – First moment for Goodison to get involved as Harrison goes to the endline, looks like it could have been a corner but the ref and assistant ref decide goalkick and everyone’s howling again.
6’ – United have looked the better side early on, passing the ball confidently and not giving the Blues a sniff.
3’ – OOF, what a goal. A peach of a cross from an unmarked Rashford on the right, and he finds Garnacho with a flying scissor kick volley that goes over Pickford and into the far corner. Oh my goodness, what a goal that was. Goodison should be stunned, but they’re still very loud. United lead early 1-0, that will take some of the venom out of this stadium.
1’ – Underway at Goodison, United appear calm holding up the ball, not letting the noise get to them.
McTominay goes down theatrically from a Branthwaite challenge and wants a penalty, nothing doing, and the VAR confirms that too.
Here we go!
4:25pm – The siren goes off, Z-Cars rings out and the players are out on the pitch. All the Premier League ceremonies are being done now with a soundtrack of loud booing. This is the Goodison bearpit at its very best.
Almost everyone at the ground is holding up the protest red cards, but cheering wildly as each Everton player is introduced.
4:20pm – The red cards are being waved with gusto, and the plan is to boo the Premier League anthem when it plays, and then again on the tenth minute after kickoff.
4:00pm – The march to the ground before kickoff is now underway.

3:40pm – Blues are out in force in the areas surrounding Goodison Park, making their feelings known about the Premier League and the ten point deduction that they’ve handed down to the Toffees.

Everton – no surprises here, with Idrissa Gueye slotting right in for the injured Amadou Onana who is at Goodison but won’t be on the bench either. Seamus Coleman is on the bench though after coming through another ninety minutes for the Under-21s this week. Interestingly, no Beto on the bench today, so Dominic Calvert-Lewin is going to have to play the full ninety.
Manchester United – A surprise first start for young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo in the double-pivot with Scott McTominay, with Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho lined up behind Anthony Martial up top.
Everton versus Manchester United is usually a marquee match-up that gets picked up by one or the other television channels. However, today’s clash is not just about the result. It is also the first game for the Toffees since the announcement of Everton having ten points cut as a result of the investigation into the club’s violations of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
The decision to deduct an unprecedented ten points has been widely panned, and the rage of the Everton fanbase has boiled over in a way that will become very apparent to all who watch today’s game. The injustice has united the club in a way we have not seen in our lifetime (and this is after two straight relegation survival battles), and that anger will manifest itself in a very vocal and visible manner today, with banners, flags, posters, songs and more planned.
