good morning!
It’s that time of year again when Spotify’s data-mining pays off dividends. That’s right – it’s time for Wrapped!
Your HIC shared his last year. In that same spirit, I’m sharing mine again. And my whole thing of “Spotify doesn’t represent the music I listen to” still rings true. Even truer when you count how many concerts I’ve attended, records bought and time discovering artists on the radio.
Top genres: Jazz, Rock, Alternative Rock, Hard Bop, Indie Pop
My listening place: Berkeley, California (Deadhead confirmed)
Top song: My Little Suede Shoes by Charlie Parker (a short, wonderful song that’s super listenable every time of the day)
Top artists: Grateful Dead (again), Art Tatum, Charles Mingus, Ahmad Jamal (RIP), Chick Corea
Not even bothering with the superhero nonsense.
And now fitzie’s wrapped!
I went to many, many concerts this year. Possibly more this year than any other year. So it’s tough to say which were the best and which were not. But I’m going to try my best.
Fitzie’s favourite concerts: Dead & Company at Citi Field, Jenny Lewis at The Anthem, My Morning Jacket at The Beacon Theatre
Fitzie’s least favourite concerts: The Dandy Warhols (and this is only because of the group that talked non stop – I eventually moved); Abdullah Ibrahim (gosh I was so tired during this)
Vinyl records brought: Probably a couple dozen. Not as many this year – I’m not a big fan of the DC vinyl scene. I even went this past weekend and walked out empty handed.
My coolest record finds: A Japanese pressing of Lee Morgan’s The Sidewinder from the Blue Note series, The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society European edition on swirl vinyl
Favourite radio station: 88.5 FM The Socal Sound – Support public radio!
Favourite album from 2023: Desire I Want To Turn Into You, by Caroline Polachek
Most exciting ‘new artists’: Blondshell, Stephen Sanchez
Fitzie’s track of the day, part one: It Wasn’t Love, by Blondshell
Old & new artists I’m happy to have discovered: Caroline Rose, Sun Ra, Mitski, Dead Kennedys
My all-time favourite album is: Coming to a hoddle near you
My all-time music artist: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
My all-time favourite song is: Marquee Moon, by Television
Rest in peace: Tina Turner, Jeff Beck, David Crosby, Tom Verlaine, Jimmy Buffett, Robbie Robertson, Sinead O’Connor, Tony Bennett, Gary Young, Randy Meisner, Jane Birkin, Gordon Lightfoot, Tim Bachman, Andy Rourke, Ahmad Jamal, Henry Belafonte, Burt Bacharach, Edward Jordan, Steve Mackey, Lisa Marie Presley, Robbie Bachman, Shane MacGowan and more
Fitzie’s track of the day, part two: Prove It, by Television
