Championship side Swansea City are looking for a new head coach after recently sacking Michael Duff. According to the BBC, one of their top candidates is Ange Postecoglou’s top assistants.
The BBC is reporting that Chris Davies, who joined Tottenham as Senior Assistant Coach from Leicester City this past summer after spending several years working under Brendan Rodgers, is an attractive option for Swansea, currently languishing at 18th in the table. Interestingly, it appears that Davies was one of the finalists to take over at Swansea this past summer before the club appointed Duff; he joined Tottenham shortly afterwards.
Davies and Ryan Mason are the two assistant coaches responsible for implementing Ange Postecoglou’s offensive system at Spurs, and he’s familiar with coaching possession-style football which is of interest to the Swans. Davies is also a former Wales U19 international who’s playing career was cut short, so you can understand why both club and coach might be interested.
The BBC doesn’t say whether Davies would be interested in the job this time around, but notes that Swansea would have to get permission from Tottenham to speak with Davies, and would almost certainly have to pay Spurs some sort of compensation should they offer the job to him.
There are supposedly other candidates on Swansea’s list, including Manchester United coach Eric Ramsey, former Luton manager Nathan Jones, and former Birmingham City boss John Eustace.
This is something to keep an eye on. There’s no question that Davies, as Postecoglou’s top lieutenant, has been instrumental in Spurs’ quick turnaround and early season form. If he does leave, Spurs would need to replace him somehow — maybe they bring someone in, but more likely they’d promote from within. I can certainly see someone like Mason being promoted to Ange’s #2 should Davies opt to go.
Guess we’ll be keeping an eye on the Championship coaching carousel for a while.
