Bayern Munich were away to Bayer Leverkusen and for the second straight year in this fixture, had a chance to clinch the Frauen-Bundesliga. After a 5-1 win by Wolfsburg yesterday, they needed a win to clinch with two matches to go, but Leverkusen wanted to spoil the party just like last season.
Georgia Stanway started the scoring in the 17th minute with her seventh goal of the season. Just ten minutes later, Linda Dallman doubled the lead. Bayern cruised the rest of the first half with very little chances going Leverkusen’s way.
In the second half, Bayern had chances to put the match away but failed to take advantage. In the 63rd minute a goal was given to Leverkusen’s Karczewska when the ball bounced on the line, but quite possibly did not complete cross the line. Of course, in 2024 there is still no VAR in the Frauen-Bundesliga. This was just the seventh goal allowed by Bayern and Mala Grohs.
Although this made things nervy for the last 30 minutes, Bayern pushed forward and won 2-1 to win to clinch the Meisterschale! They will have to wait until the final match — away to Hoffenheim — before they can lift the trophy officially. Bayern will also look to remain unbeaten for just the second time in history over these last two league fixtures.
Bayern will look to complete the domestic double down the road in Cologne on Thursday when they face Wolfsburg for the DFB-Pokal der Frauen. Wolfsburg are looking for their tenth Pokal in a row.
