The Bayern Munich coaching search is getting out of hand. Even former CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge seems to think so — especially about the very public nature of the current flailing.
“These are topics in which I’m no longer directly involved because I’m no longer active in the operational business,” Rummenigge said in an interview with Diario AS (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “However, I can only recommend acting a bit more hermetically again. Back when we signed [current Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola], we worked on the operation for a total of six months and no one found out about it. You have to act strategically, but without your every next move being in all the newspapers every day.”
Indeed, what has happened to Bayern’s stealth mode of operation? Every coaching target from Xabi Alonso to Julian Nagelsmann…even longshots like Julen Lopetegui, and topics such as whether the club is open to revisiting closed doors (Thomas Tuchel, Hansi Flick)…every twist and turn has played out in the public eye.
“The most important thing is continuity. We have to be self-critical regarding this point,” Rummenigge continued. “We deviated a bit from our path lately, both on the pitch and within the club’s management. FC Bayern must regain the stability that characterized it at all levels. You have to remember that people like Uli [Hoeneß], Franz [Beckenbauer] and I held the helm for what felt like a hundred years. It is difficult to achieve such longevity in a leadership position, but FC Bayern must get back on the path of continuity.”
Or: the more things change, the more they stay the same? The old guard at Bayern seems to be reluctant to give way to anything new. But recent results in mind, maybe they are right.
