The first of this season’s Champions League finalists will be confirmed tonight as Paris Saint-Germain host Borussia Dortmund in the opener of this week’s blockbuster semi-final second-leg ties. The visitors arrive at the Parc des Princes holding a narrow 1-0 advantage from last week’s initial clash in Germany, which saw Jadon Sancho dazzle and Niclas Fullkrug score before both teams missed plenty of golden chances during a thrilling second half.
While 1997 winners Dortmund are eyeing their third final and first since 2013 at Wembley, which also hosts next month’s showpiece, PSG will be desperate to mount a comeback tonight as the beaten 2020 finalists look to finally end their long wait for European glory in what is Kylian Mbappe’s final campaign with the club before he joins fellow semi-finalists Real Madrid in the summer.
Tonight will mark Mbappe’s final Champions League outing for PSG on home soil, with head coach Luis Enrique no doubt tempted to spruce up his attack as he also deals with the defensive absence of Lucas Hernandez, who will be sidelined for months with the injury he suffered last week. PSG were dealt a major injury blow during last week’s first-leg defeat in Dortmund after key defender Lucas Hernandez was injured trying to prevent Niclas Fullkrug’s impressive first-half goal.
It was later revealed that the French centre-back had suffered an ACL tear that required surgery and is expected to keep him out for several months, meaning no European Championship this summer.
Young Brazilian defender Lucas Beraldo, a January signing from Sao Paulo, is expected to step in alongside captain Marquinhos at the back tonight, though Milan Skriniar is also a potential option along with Danilo Pereira.
Presnel Kimpembe remains out for PSG, along with goalkeeper Sergio Rico and full-back Layvin Kurzawa.
We could see head coach Luis Enrique try to liven up his attack tonight in an attempt to mount a comeback, which could mean one of Lee Kang-in, Marco Asensio, Goncalo Ramos or Randal Kolo Muani coming in with Bradley Barcola’s starting berth potentially under threat.
