good morning!
It’s been a very long time since we’ve had a proper Mingus Monday Tuesday here at the Hoddle of Coffee. Today, we rectify that.
I recently acquired one very cool box set, Mingus Takes Manhattan – The Complete Birdland Dates: 1961 – 1962.
The Birdland dates feature Mingus near the very top of his creative peak. Some of the most fun music we get to hear are the seven different versions of Eat That Chicken, all of which sound distinct from the others.
I’ve never gone to Birdland myself. Not yet, anyhow. And this might be one of the few Mingus live tracks I own after Live at the Bohemia and Carnegie Hall. Bohemia still trumps this for me, though, as it was my introduction to Mingus.
After listening through the box set, Side B on the first LP has to be my favourite. Mingus takes us from Take the A Train to an almost sarcastic Fables of faubus before blending that into our first Eat That Chicken.
It’s a shame these aren’t on YouTube, at least not individually. So I hope you enjoy the album version instead for your track of the day.
