Man United could lose Raphael Varane on a free transfer this summer.
Manchester United have not been the same team defensively this season. The long term Lisandro Martinez injury has not helped matters, with the Argentine the undisputed best defender at the club.
Coming in at a close second last season was Raphael Varane, though it appears the Frenchman has regressed. Possibly due to all the small injuries that he consistently picks up.
Erik ten Hag has opted for Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, an out of position Luke Shaw and even Jonny Evans ahead of Varane this term.
Now, it looks as though the ex-Real Madrid man could get a chance at leaving the club, earlier than we all thought…
It’s The Athletic with the claim. They state that the United star ‘could become a free agent’ this summer, which is a year earlier than previously publicised.
The terms of Varane’s contract are such that his current deal expires this season, with the option of extending by a further year, rather than having a deal that runs until 2025 – as stated by the club upon completion of the transfer.
Obviously, this means Varane is free to talk to overseas clubs as early as next months, about signing a pre-contract agreement.
United could opt to let Varane walk away for nothing, saving around £13m in weekly wages. Given his current standing in the squad, this could make sense.
It’s a massive shame as alongside Licha, Varane looked world class. I’m not sure why he doesn’t look like the same player without the Argentine by his side. Perhaps it’s an age thing. Perhaps he’s just given up hope of winning major trophies here in Manchester.
Who knows, but as things stand, I’d be surprised if he’s at the club beyond this summer.
