Donny van de Beek has left Man United, albeit temporarily for now, heading to Eintracht Frankfurt on loan.
Manchester United’s squad needs trimming down this month. With no European football on the table, Erik ten Hag can use this opportunity to streamline the dressing room and get rid of those underperforming players.
Donny van de Beek certainly falls into that category. Talks about a potential move away have been growing in frequency over the last month or so. Now, that news has been confirmed.
On New Years Day, the official club website stated that Van de Beek will leave United for the remainder of the season, joining Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt on loan.
The 26-year-old has struggled for both form and minutes at Old Trafford, with this move always looking inevitable. Now, Van de Beek will be praying for genuine opportunities with Frankfurt, looking to prove that he still has what it takes to perform at a high level.
This is just a loan deal, though Frankfurt will have the opportunity to purchase Van de Beek outright for around the £10m mark, assuming it all goes well for the Dutchman in Germany.
In an ideal world, Van de Beek will sign for Frankfurt for good, though his huge wages could eventually become an issue. No doubt United are already heavily subsidising his earnings during this loan move – and they may still be forced to do so if the sale does go through in the summer.
Sadly, it just hasn’t quite worked out for Donny here in Manchester. The fact that even Ten Hag couldn’t get a tune out of him, despite the pair working together with great success at Ajax, means his United career is likely over regardless of what happens over the next six months.
