Databank – Your guide to the afternoon’s action
JOCKEY TO FOLLOW
PAUL MULRENNAN has ridden more winners at Ripon in the last five years than any other jockey and has chances today with DIAMONDONTHEHILL (Ripon, 5.15), WEN MOON (5.50), SEA KING (6.20) and MERRIJIG (6.50).
TRAINER TO FOLLOW
The WILLIAM HAGGAS stable is moving through the gears as the season gets into its swing and has good chances with al mUBHIR (Leicester, 2.05), winner of the race last year, SPACE LEGEND (Leicester, 2.37), APPROVAL (Wolverhampton, 6.30) and COLLEGE CHOIR (Doncaster, 7.45).
BIG DAY FOR
Conditional jockey DYLAN JOHNSON, who despite not being able to claim his riding allowance, has retained the ride on Sam Thomas-trained AL DANCER (Sandown, 2.25) in the Grade Two bet365 John Oaksey Chase.
WATCH OUT FOR
SPACE LEGEND (Leicester, 2.37) needs to win this maiden very well to justify his entry in York’s Derby trial, the Dante Stakes.
HORSES FOR COURSES
JONBON (Sandown, 3.00) has won on all three starts at the track, all of them Grade Ones.
TRAINER TARGET
TIM EASTERBY has won Ripon’s six-furlong handicap (7.20) for three-year-olds three times in the last 10 years. He is represented by MARIE’S SECRET and CHAT UP LINE.
PERFECT PARTNERS
DAVID PROBERT has ridden four winners from nine rides for Jack Jones for a £1 level stake profit of £2.68. He rides the trainer’s fengari (Doncaster, 8.15).
BEST RACE FOR FAVOURITES
Eight have won the 3.00 at Sandown in the last 10 years.
TOP PRIZEMONEY EARNERS
RIPON: 6.20 GET SHIRTY – £456,616
SANDOWN: 3.00 JONBON – £764,691
DONCASTER: 6.40 DAKOTA GOLD – £447,991
ROBIN GOODFELLOW – Best Bets
The form of STEEL ALLY (NB) (above) received a notable boost when Doyen Quest followed up at Cheltenham a week ago, and he holds strong claims in the opening novices’ handicap hurdle at Sandown (1.50).
This progressive runner has relished the better ground on his last two starts and should prove well handicapped off only a 7lb higher mark than when he lost by a neck at Newbury.
In the bet365 Gold Cup (3.35), the veteran SAM BROWN (NAP) looks overpriced based on his improved runs in a visor this year. Victorious by half a length at Ascot on his start before last, the gelding then stayed on to finish only a length behind Cruz Control at Aintree over 3m 1f.
This step up to 3m 4½f will suit him and he runs here 4lb ‘well in’ at the weights.
THE WIZARD OF ODDS
By Chris Baker
2.05 LEICESTER
Last year’s winner Al Mubhir holds strong claims but MISS CANTIK (EW), a dual winner on testing ground in France and placed in Listed company, is fancied to run well at a bigger price. 9-1
2.45 HAYDOCK
SPARKS FLY (nap) has won eight of her 10 starts on turf, including at this course last September. She then went on to bolt up in a French Listed race. 7-1
6.40 DONCASTER
KATEY KONTENT will relish today’s conditions. Although she didn’t win last season, she ran consistently well and wasn’t beaten far in the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes as a juvenile. 7-2
