Databank – Your guide to the afternoon’s action
JOCKEY TO FOLLOW
CHAMPION jockey Will Buick has been on a decent run since winning last Saturday’s 2,000 Guineas and heads to Ascot with some interesting rides. HALLASAN (3.10), MIDAIR (3.45), TURN UP THE HEAT (4.20) and BRAVE NATION (4.55) all looked liked they would improve for seasonal debuts.
TRAINER TO FOLLOW
The John and Thady Gosden outfit have moved through the gears with 11 wins in the past fortnight. They will be hoping eye-catching Wetherby winner DANIELLE (Lingfield, 2.25) can show her Classic credentials, while MOSTABSHIR (Ascot, 2.40), who contested a Group One race last season, is interesting in the Victoria Cup.
BIG DAY FOR…
Romanian-born 7lb claiming apprentice jockey SORIN MOLDOVEANU, who has a big Saturday ride retaining the mount on his Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained Windsor winner FIRST OFFICER (Lingfield, 1.15). He also rides Brighton winner SOLDIERS DESIGN (Lingfield, 4.45) for John Ryan.
HORSES FOR COURSES
PEARLE D’OR (Ascot, 2.40) has run three times over course and distance and never been out of the first three, with first-, second- and third-place finishes.
TRAINER TARGET
RICHARD HANNON has won the Pertemps Network Spring Trophy three times in the past seven years. He is represented by WITCH HUNTER (Haydock, 3.50).
PERFECT PARTNERS
JASON HART has ridden 13 winners from 49 rides for Hugo Palmer to show a £1 level stake profit of +£44.63. He rides the trainer’s SUPASPECIALAWESOME (Leicester, 6.55).
BEST RACE FOR FAVOURITES
Five favourites have won the 3.50 at Haydock and 4.55 at Ascot in the past 10 years.
TOP PRIZEMONEY EARNERS
ASCOT: 2.40 BLESS HIM – £322,273
LINGFIELD: 3.35 REMARQUEE – £251,673
WARWICK: 7.05 WAR LORD – £180,234
ROBIN GOODFELLOW – Best Bets
The seven furlongs at Ascot in the Victoria Cup (2.40) should prove perfect for THE WIZARD OF EYE (NAP) on his stable debut for Charlie Fellowes.
The five-year-old — gelded since his last run — has always been a strong traveller in his races over a mile and looks well-handicapped off a mark below 100 for the first time in his career.
Tom Marquand, who rode him to finish fifth at the Shergar Cup meeting last year, is an eye-catching jockey booking for the yard, and the pair should prove hard to beat in this competitive handicap.
Later at Haydock, Cheltenham festival winner LARK IN THE MORNIN (NB) should justify his short price in the Swinton Handicap Hurdle (3.15). The Irish raider won despite the heavy ground last time and should prove much better suited by the faster ground here. An 8lb rise up to a mark of 130 is fair, and he can be the first four-year-old winner since 2014.
THE WIZARD OF ODDS
By Chris Baker
2.05 ASCOT
STRONG IMPACT ended last season with a comfortable victory in novice company at Epsom. She was a beaten favourite on her seasonal reappearance and will enjoy this return to turf. 15-2
2.40 ASCOT
RAMAZAN was beaten narrowly in Listed company on his final start of last year, having also been runner-up in the Ayr Gold Cup. He had a good prep run for this race last month. 14-1
2.55 NOTTINGHAM
TIGER BAY (nap) was beaten by just a neck on her return to action at Windsor last month. She is entitled to have come on for that run and remains unexposed over the six-furlong distance. 7-2
