Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic has lavished praise on his teammate Josko Gvardiol.
The defender bagged himself a brace during the Cityzens’ 4-0 win over Fulham on Saturday afternoon and, speaking after the game, Kovacic said that his fellow countryman has the ability to play as a striker:
“He [Gvardiol] is playing unbelievable. I knew him already for a long time now and his quality is unbelievable. He can play up front or at the back, [he’s] an unbelievable player and guy. I’m very happy for him to score these goals.”
Gvardiol has now hit the back of the net 5 times in all competitions this season, with all of them having been scored since the beginning of April.
He got off the mark with a spectacular goal in the first leg of City’s Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid. The fullback then got on the scoresheet in subsequent league fixtures versus Luton Town and Nottingham Forest before bagging two more at Craven Cottage.
Guardiola believes that Gvardiol has a big future ahead of him
City boss Pep Guardiola joked after the Fulham game that the club had signed the “best winger in the planet”. He was very impressed with how Gvardiol scored his first goal.
Guardiola then went on to compliment the Croatian international even further by saying City have made an “incredible signing” who will benefit the club for “many, many years to come”.
City’s summer transfer business is now paying off
The Premier League champions spent an eyewatering £77.6m to bring Gvardiol to the Etihad at the start of the campaign and it appears that he will be well worth the investment.
Kovacic has also improved since arriving from Chelsea last year. After struggling to make an impact initially, he has become increasingly important in recent weeks, having started 4 of the last 5 league matches.
