Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has criticised the Premier League for failing to include Rodri on the eight-man shortlist for the Player of the Season award.
Many have made the Spanish international the favourite for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year prize and, when asked about the surprise omission, Ederson said the decision was “absurd”:
“There are good players, but I see Rodri as a great candidate who isn’t on the list. I don’t understand why he’s not on the list either. Honestly, that’s unacceptable.”
“If you look at his year, his campaign, the last few seasons he’s been playing and see that he’s not on the list, it’s absurd. I don’t know what criteria they use to nominate players, but there are also great players competing. But I see Rodri as a great candidate to win and unfortunately, he’s not on the list.”
Rodri has been in great form for City
The midfielder has been key to Pep Guardiola’s side’s title challenge, with the team having not lost any of the 33 league games he has featured in this season.
In fact, City are unbeaten in Rodri’s last 73 appearances for the club, which demonstrates how important he is to the reigning Premier League champions.
Who has made the shortlist for the Premier League Player of the Season?
While Rodri was not included among the nominees, two of his teammates, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, were selected. The City duo are vying with the likes of Arsenal pair Martin Odegaard & Declan Rice, Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins, Chelsea winger Cole Palmer, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.
Fans were able to nominate their favourite but voting closed on Monday. The winner will be announced on Saturday 18th May; the day before the final match of the season.
