Manchester City transfer target Michael Zetterer has a release clause that expires in “mid-June”, according to Sport Bild.
The German magazine claims that the Premier League champions are pursuing the Werder Bremen no.1 as they look to strengthen their options in goal.
Ederson has been heavily linked with a move away from the Etihad with the Brazilian set to be the subject of interest from Saudi Pro League teams.
Al-Ittihad are reportedly lining up a £25m bid for City’s first-choice keeper. It’s unlikely to be enough to tempt Pep Guardiola’s side into selling as it is believed that he has an asking price closer to £60m.
If Ederson does depart the Manchester club in the coming weeks, though, the goalkeeping department will need to be addressed.
Ortega is expected to step up to No.1
Guardiola has been full of praise for the 31-year-old’s performances this season but he has just a year left on his contract and he’s already hinted that he might leave to be a regular starter.
Ederson’s departure would, however, open up an avenue for Ortega to stay and there is every chance that he would extend his contract with the Cityzens if he is given guarantees about game time.
SportBild claim that if Ortega is “promoted” to no.1 status, it would then leave the door open for a new no.2 (such as Zetterer) to be brought in.
What do City fans need to know about Zetterer?
The German is already 28 years of age, but it has taken him a long time to establish himself at Werder Bremen. He initially joined the Bundesliga side in 2015 but he has had to play second fiddle to Jiri Pavlenka for much of that time.
However, after the Czech international got injured before the game against Borussia Dortmund back in October, Zetterer took his chance and he has been first choice for Bremen ever since.
