Manchester City are “interested” in signing Benfica midfielder Joao Neves, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Writing in his Daily Briefing column, Romano said that the Portuguese international has been scouted by the Premier League champions, along with rivals Manchester United and Arsenal:
“My information there remains that Neves has been scouted by Arsenal, Man United, Man City… all clubs interested but nothing is advanced at this stage, while it’s also important to remember that Neves’ price tag is double compared to Zubimendi as his release clause at Benfica is €120m.”
That eye-watering valuation of €120m (£102m) does suggest a deal this summer may be very tough to negotiate, unless Benfica decide to lower their demands.
Guardiola is said to be a fan of Neves
Romano has confirmed reports which emerged late last month that the Cityzens have been keeping tabs on the 19-year-old. It was claimed that manager Pep Guardiola is a big fan of the player.
Neves has yet to make an impression on the European stage at club level, with his performances in the Champions League not particularly impressive as Benfica lost their first four group-stage games.
However, he could turn heads at Euro 2024 when he is expected to line up in Portugal’s midfield. There may be even more demand for his services after the tournament.
Silva wants the player at City
Guardiola is by no means the only one at City who has been impressed with Neves. When it was reported back in November that Manchester United were interested in the player, Bernardo Silva said he would do all he could to bring him to the Etihad:
“If I can, I’ll make a move for Joao Neves to go to Man City instead of Man United, of course.”
Based on Romano’s remarks, a transfer looks some way off at the moment, but it is one to keep a close eye on.
