Man United are now somewhat confident they can secure the signing of Matthijs de Ligt this summer.
Manchester United Football Club will have to bring in at least one centre-half this summer, after losing Raphael Varane on a free transfer.
Several names have been linked with filling the void left by the Frenchman, while this week, Matthijs de Ligt has jumped to the front of the queue – probably due to Jarrad Branthwaite’s huge valuation.
Now, the Manchester Evening News have provided an encouraging update for fans of the Dutch centre-half. According to their latest information, United are ‘hopeful’ of securing the signing.
On top of that, Bayern Munich are now said to be ‘open’ to the sale of the player, who is valued at around the £42m mark.
De Ligt played for Erik ten Hag during their Ajax days together, before the Dutch centre-half moved to Juventus and then Bayern Munich. Now, it seems like both are ready for a reunion at Old Trafford.
What’s interesting here is that the MEN claim United want to sign two centre-backs, as not only has Varane left, but the Reds are still looking to move on from Victor Lindelof who is into the final year of his contract.
Signing a player like De Ligt, for such a little fee, would be an excellent piece of business. This is a guy who could completely transform this United defence in a positive way, though it is somewhat dependent on the Dutchman avoiding injury.
De Ligt has been plagued by treatment table woes, which is probably partly why Bayern are open to his sale. He’s had knee problems which is somewhat worrying, particularly when United’s squad already picked up its fair share of injuries last season. Let’s hope the Reds conduct a very thorough medical if a bid is accepted by Bayern…
