Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says James McAtee is very much in his first-team plans for next season.
The 21-year-old spent last campaign out on loan at Sheffield United but, asked whether he would like to keep the midfielder at the Etihad this summer, Guardiola replied:
“I would love to have, to keep him [McAtee] next season with us, because he’s a special guy to play in small spaces, in the pockets, and we don’t have many.”
“When you play in the Premier League in a team fighting to not be relegated you get something special. I am curious to see Macca especially. He’s a player I have a high opinion of, and I would like if he can insert properly with the team.”
Chelsea have targeted McAtee
It was reported last week that Blues boss Enzo Maresca was keen on signing the player. The Spaniard had worked with McAtee during his spell as Under 23 head coach and he also wanted to take him on loan to Leicester last year.
The England Under 21 international ultimately decided to join Sheffield United, who could give him first-team opportunities in the Premier League. As Guardiola says, he is hoping his time at Bramall Lane has proven beneficial.
Guardiola has confirmed that another midfielder won’t be leaving the Etihad
As well as speaking about McAtee’s future, Guardiola was asked about Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian international has been heavily linked with a transfer to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.
There were even reports that De Bruyne had accepted a contract, although those claims were later denied. Guardiola was pretty emphatic when questioned on the 33-year-old’s situation, stating he is “not leaving” the club.
It remains to be seen whether that means De Bruyne will sign an extension or depart on a free transfer when his current deal expires next year.
