Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been putting in some exemplary performances at the heart of the backline, and the Argentine has become an integral part of Ange Postecoglou‘s squad.
He is one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and he proved these credentials on multiple occasions in the last season. And owing to those outings, he has been subject to links with a move to Real Madrid over the ongoing summer transfer window.
Wenham urges Tottenham to tie down World Cup winner Romero
While Daniel Levy was quick to rebuff Madrid’s approach for Romero, John Wenham, owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, believes that Spurs will need to prioritize a new contract for the World Cup winner.
He acknowledges the quality that the former Atalanta defender possesses and remains hopeful that the club can agree on a brand-new five-year deal with the 26-year-old. Romero’s current contract at White Hart Lane runs till 2027.
Wenham suggests that the club will feel more secure about the Argentine’s future at Tottenham if he has a long-term contract at N17.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Wenham said:
“From Spurs’ point of view, they need to get Romero’s contract renewed this year. He only has three years left to run on his current deal. Therefore, agreeing on fresh terms needs to be an absolute priority for the club. Hopefully they can agree on a brand-new five-year deal that expires in 2029, as that would allow them to feel safe and relaxed in their position. As I said, this needs to be a priority for the club, pretty much immediately.”
Postecoglou would be keen to keep Romero as part of his Spurs project
Ange Postecoglou will no doubt love to ensure that his star defender stays in North London for the long term, and hence it is very unlikely that Levy would not look to tie down the Argentine to a new contract.
It would rather be a question on the player’s end if he wants to extend his stay at Spurs.
He has acclaimed multiple international titles, and Romero would want to have similar accolades at the club level too.
