Variety is the spice of life, they say, and variety definitely was the spice that livened up the Champions League draw on Thursday. Instead of every team facing off against the same 3 opponents in the Champions League until February, the fixture list for each club contains matches against 8 separate opponents of various skill from various locations.
Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund certainly reacted in a positive manner to the new Champions League format, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, identifying several highlights that come with Bayern’s upcoming Champions League fixtures: “Our opponents are very balanced, with two absolute top teams, Paris and Barcelona. There are also very interesting away games, including in Rotterdam and at Aston Villa, with two very emotional stadiums. It’s a very exciting, new format of the Champions League. We are looking forward to the new season in the competition.”
The wait for the new season will not be long, with the first round of matches set to take place in September. And then the excitement can really begin.
