Following on from Neuer’s announcement that he was retiring from the German national team, eyes have now turned to the German goalkeeping great’s situation at Bayern Munich. With the former Schalke 04 goalkeeper’s contract expiring in less than a year, at which point he will be 39 years old, his future at Bayern remains rather up in the air. So, considering these factors, how does Bayern proceed with Manuel Neuer?
Speaking to Michel Shröer, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen explains that a patient approach fits best: “We’re happy that Manuel will be in goal for FC Bayern this season and I’m certain that we will be successful together with him. We have not yet discussed his future internally. The next few weeks and months will show how things develop.”
At this advanced age, even a goalkeeper such as Neuer could feel the restrictions of Father Time in his bones. Taking the time to assess how Neuer handles his declining physical ability throughout the season is probably the right approach.
